WHAT IS A FIRST MOON CIRCLE?

Education, empowerment, play

Help your daughter to feel prepared for puberty and her first period (first moon).

In a First Moon Circle, she will receive valuable knowledge and self-care tools to help her look after her body and emotions.

These half day workshops (3 hours) are a unique opportunity for girls aged 9-12 to learn, play and ask questions in an intimate, inclusive, supportive setting. By honouring the rite of passage of their first bleed, participating in story, craft and more, girls find out what to expect and how to navigate their menstrual cycle.

The session concludes with a mother-daughter celebration where you can offer your child encouraging advice or a special wish so she can feel supported by you as she grows up.

Your child will get a gift bag, plus a beaded bracelet that she makes with you in the circle, to remind her of the magic of her cycle and ways to approach self-care.

An illustrated, full-colour reference First Moon Guide is also included. Filled with useful tips, tricks and a handy chart to track her cycle, it’s a resource she’ll want to return to over and over.

Once you book a ticket, you will receive more information on what you and your child can expect, and how to prepare for the day. This includes general recommendations as well as advice on what positive guidance you could share with your child during the session, helping the conversation to continue openly at home.

For any questions that you or your child may have not listed in the FAQ section, feel free to contact me.

STRUCTURE OF THE SESSION

STRUCTURE OF THE SESSION

Part 1: Periods, puberty and cycles

In the first half of the session, the girls get to discover and have fun together. They will learn accurate information about what changes to expect in their body and emotions during puberty, as they reach and experience their first period, also known as menarche.

Importantly, the girls can ask all their awkward, embarrassing and curious questions. . .

They will find out:

  • What are periods and puberty? What happens during this stage — what will they notice, feel and experience about their body, mind and emotions.

  • The children will be introduced to the female body, hormones and reproductive system.

  • An overview of cycle awareness and the superpowers available during each of the 4 phases of the menstrual cycle – they will learn about how their energy, mood, needs and desires can be different at each stage.

  • Cycle self-care: its importance and how to support themselves in each phase, including the benefits of rest and ways to navigate the pre-menstrual phase.

  • The different period products available, such as those that are kind to the Earth and their body. Girls will have a chance to play with different options and explore what they might want to use when they start their period.

Part 2: Mothers and daughters celebration

Mothers and caregivers are invited to join the second half of the session.

Parents have an opportunity to:

  • Be a role model for their child, showing them that it is okay, normal and healthy to be open about periods and puberty with their friends, adults and others.

  • Help girls to feel supported and remember that every woman has gone through this experience.

  • Sit in circle with other mothers and caregivers going through the same journey.

  • Build on the connection and bond with their child by making a special bracelet together.

  • Share some positive encouragement, advice or guidance for their child to bring into their menstruating years.

  • Celebrate this important transition in their daughter’s life — a new, magical beginning. . .

WHY ATTEND

WHY ATTEND A FIRST MOON CIRCLE?

  • Parents and children are held in the safe space of a circle where talking about periods and puberty is normalised.

  • Celebrating menarche as a rite of passage shows girls how to work with, not against their menstrual cycle, and consequently, removes menstrual shame.

  • In the second half of the session, parents are offered tools and language to support their child after the event is over.

  • By experiencing a circle with their daughter, mothers can start to heal their own relationship to their first period and menstruating years. Parents can give their child the wisdom they wish they'd received at menarche.

  • A First Moon Circle sets a child up for other important rites of passages after menarche, namely motherhood and menopause. Through the celebration and empowerment offered, these circles help them feel prepared and eases the transition through these milestones in the future.

Testimonials

“Talking about puberty in a group of women and girls was invaluable – it is something we cannot create at home. It will build a sense of connection for my daughter as she grows up and revisits these topics. I found the four different weeks of the cycle really helpful”
